Eating Cajun food is an experience unlike any other cuisine. The flavorful blend of herbs, spices, and ingredients will continuously have you coming back for more. While the heart of Cajun cuisine resides in New Orleans, Louisiana, Metro Detroit is home to some authentic and delicious Cajun food restaurants that will wow you from the very first bite. Check out these places whether you’re new to Cajun food or have been craving it for some time.

Louisiana Creole Gumbo

Detroit and Farmington Hills

Louisiana Creole Gumbo started back in 1970 on Gratiot Avenue on the edge of Eastern Market by Margerine and Joe Stafford. They served up the authentic Louisiana and southern-style fare Joe picked up from his mother on Bayou Lafourche in Louisiana. Today the tradition continues at their three locations with a variety of Creole, gumbo, jambalaya, and Southern dishes on their menus.

Howe’s Bayou

22848 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale

This is how you Traverse Michigan. With cutting edge technology, tons of cargo space, and advanced safety features, Chevy Traverse is your key to unlocking the mitten state.

Howe’s Bayou is a small spot in downtown Ferndale serving up authentic Cajun food. Not only will you find a few different Po’ Boy sandwiches, but three types of etouffee, red beans and rice, and jambalaya. Their bar serves several cocktails that are true to their southern roots as well.

Detroit 75 Kitchen

4800 West Fort Street, Detroit

Detroit 75 Kitchen started as a dream to feed truckers taking a pit stop at their family’s truck stop and has grown to be a favorite restaurant in the city. Voted one of the best food trucks in the city, this permanent fixture gets lines down the street throughout the week. Their menu mainly features sandwiches, including a shrimp po’ boy that is out of this world.

Fishbone’s

Detroit, Southfield, St. Clair Shores

Fishbone’s is the area’s go-to place for all things Cajun-inspired. Everything from the food to the atmosphere to the music feels like you’re stepping down Bourbon Street in New Orleans. They have many menu items you won’t see outside of the South like Alligator Bites, Crawfish Beignets, and Catfish Atchafalaya (catfish smothered with crawfish etouffee). Many nights they have live music to add to the ambiance as well.

Tom’s Oyster Bar

318 South Main Street, Royal Oak

Tom’s Oyster Bar has been an area favorite for years because of their seafood-focused menu. When it comes to their Cajun-inspired menu items, you won’t want to miss the Oysters Rockefeller, Louisiana Seafood Po Boy with shrimp and oysters, Cajun Jambalaya, and Shrimp and Grits.
